“A human body is just mysterious…..it works in a way which is impossible to understand fully ever but, scientists are trying their best to get the best possible conclusions regarding it everyday.”

Our body keeps on changing drastically in the journey of an infant then kid then a teenager, to an adult and finally an old person.

In these changes, a person’s body could develop a need for something it didn’t need earlier……one of those could be A Circumcision Surgery.

What Does Circumcision Surgery Mean?

There is a hood of skin that covers the tip of the penis called Foreskin. The circumcision surgery is nothing but removing that skin. It is usually done at the time of birth but, adult males also could opt for it later in their life when they find it necessary.

Is It Possible to Have Circumcision Surgery on Adults?

The simple answer is YES! Though it is less common or done in less percentage, it is possible. However, it is more complicated and needs more time to recover than infants but, there could be a number of benefits an adult may opt for later in his life, which we will be discussing in further sections for sure.

But is it beneficial?

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended that a circumcision surgery could benefit the male by reducing the chances of some potential viruses like HIV.

When it comes to a newborn baby, it is totally up to parents, whether they want their child to get the surgery or not, but an adult has full rights to opt for one without any guardian.

Why might an Adult go Through the Circumcision Surgery?

An adult male may feel the need for circumcision surgery later on in his life for many possible reasons. Some of them could be:

1- Prevention from certain diseases- A circumcised penis is in low risk of some diseases like Penile Cancer, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STIs) and Urinary Tract Infection (UTIs).

2- Personal, cultural or religious beliefs and aesthetics- There are some cultural and religious beliefs, in which circumcision is compulsory to be done. So, in a case a male adult changes his religion, she may need to have the surgery.

Also, sometimes a male may have some aesthetic desires and expectations and want his penis to look a certain way. Then, he could opt for the surgery. In order to maintain more hygiene and to make the cleaning of penis easy, in that case too, a male would want to go through the surgery.

3- Phimosis and Paraphimosis- There are certain medical conditions that could occur out of nowhere and if affecting a person seriously, he needs to go to a surgeon urgently to get the surgery done.

One of them is Phimosis. In this, a person finds it too hard to pull back the foreskin as it becomes too tight over the penis. Similar condition is Paraphimosis, in which the foreskin does get pulled back from the tip of the penis but gets stuck behind the tip.

Both the conditions could be painful, lead to more infections in penis like yeast infection or bacterial and fungal infections. It could also affect the sexual function of a male.

4- Posthitis and Balanoposthitis- Sometimes there could be a condition in which a person may feel inflammation on the foreskin and even on both foreskin and tip of the penis. The first condition is called Posthitis while the later one is called Balanoposthitis.

If the condition doesn’t subsides after some time or even after using some ointment or cream, a person definitely should go see a doctor and he may even need to get the circumcision surgery to get rid of the foreskin that causes the inflammation in the first place.

What Could Happen During Recovery From Surgery?

An adult circumcised penis may take about 6 weeks to recover, while in infants the recovery takes maximum to maximum 2 weeks or less.

For the first two weeks post surgery, the penis would feel too sensitive.

The surgeon will guide you after surgery to keep the area completely dry for about 48 hours and you should avoid activities like swimming after 2 weeks of surgery.

The dissolvable stitches may last around 2-3 weeks.

There should be avoidance of tight fitted clothes and the person should wear more oversized or loose clothes, on his lower portion of the body. Also, the person should avoid sexual activities after two weeks of surgery.

A patient may feel inflammation and discomfort after surgery. Applying petroleum jelly over the penis or some Non- Steroidal Anti- Inflammatory cream or gels (NSAIDs), could help to get ease from the inflammation or discomfort.

There are hardly any chances of risks or issues after surgery, if you get it done by a professional and promising surgeon, who specialises in the Circumcision technique. The process is definitely not a necessity but having one is not a bad idea too. We just want to advise you to always consult a specialist before making a decision on your own.
