Thyroid disorders

Thyroid disorders involve the dysfunction of the thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck.

The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate various bodily functions, including metabolism.

There are several types of thyroid disorders, with the most common ones being hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Hypothyroidism:

Description: Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones, particularly thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).

Symptoms: Fatigue, weight gain, sensitivity to cold, dry skin, hair loss, constipation, and depression.

Causes: Autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's thyroiditis), iodine deficiency, certain medications, and surgery that removes part or all of the thyroid gland.

Hyperthyroidism:

Description: Hyperthyroidism results from an overproduction of thyroid hormones, leading to an increased metabolic rate.

Symptoms: Weight loss, increased appetite, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, irritability, tremors, and heat intolerance.

Causes: Graves' disease (an autoimmune disorder), toxic nodular goiter, thyroiditis, and excessive iodine intake.

Some other types of Thyroid disorders include:

  • Investigation of neck lumps
  • Thyroid nodules
  • Goiters
  • Thyroid cancer or suspicious biopsies
  • Thyroiditis
  • Family or personal history of thyroid cancer
