Every organ in a living body is crucial, the reason being, each organ has a definite function to perform and the moment one stops working, all the other organs also stop working with time, as each one is connected to each other.

So, it is very important to keep all our essential organs healthy, so do the systems involved in body functioning. Let’s talk about one of the system of body function i.e. The Biliary System.

What is the Biliary System?

It is a system of organs and ducts that functions together to produce, store and transport the Bile Juice.

The organ liver and liver cells present in it secretes bile juice, while the gallbladder and bile ducts help to transport it. It also includes Pancreas in it.

Bile juice is one of the most important secretions of the body. It helps to convert fats in fatty acids which are easy to digest by the gut. It also helps in waste excretion like bilirubin and excess cholesterol.

What is a Hepatobiliary Surgeon?

A Hepatobiliary surgeon is the one who performs surgery for the issues involved with the biliary system. He/she specialises in surgery related to the liver and pancreas.

The surgery involves benign and malignant issues of the two organs.

The main disease, which is focused by a Hepatobiliary Surgeon is liver and pancreas cancer.

What is Hepatobiliary Surgery?

The surgery which is performed to treat or remove benign and malignant conditions of the liver, bile ducts or pancreas is called Hepatobiliary surgery.

What are Some Surgeries Involved With Hepatobiliary Surgery?

The surgery is mainly done when a person is diagnosed with liver, pancreas or gallbladder cancer. It is also done when a person suffers from severe gallstones, which can’t be passed normally.

Some other diseases that need a Hepatobiliary surgery is Hepatitis and also damages to liver or pancreas due to prolonged alcohol consumption and fatty liver disease.

1- Bile Duct Resection- It is the removal of the apportion of the bile duct, because of it being damaged or having the potential to damage the neighbour organs.
Bile duct is a small tube- like structure. It helps to transport bole juice to the small intestine.

2- Liver Transplant- When a person’s liver is damaged to the point it can’t be repaired to it’s actual efficiency, then it is removed and replaced by a new healthy liver taken from a healthy donor.

3- Pancreatic Resection- It is same as BIle duct resection, meaning to cut or remove a damaged portion of the pancreas to save the further damage to pancreas and other nearby organs.

4- Radio Frequency Ablation- It is the technique of using radiofrequency energy to remove or stop the growth of some cancerous and non- cancerous cells. It is basically done to stop the abnormal or damaging cells from growing in order to spread the disease or cancer more.

5- Gall Stone Surgery- The surgery is mainly done to remove the pain causing gallstones from the gallbladder, that can’t be passed easily and normally.

What are Some Diseases Involved With Biliary System?

1- Non- Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)- It is basically an increase of fat in the liver without even consuming alcohol. The amount of fat gets so excessive in the liver that it can cause serious diseases and conditions further, that could be fatal too. There are not such researched treatments present in the medical section of the society but, you can take consultation from a doctor on how to maintain a healthy diet that will target the problem of excess fat in the liver.

2- Pancreatitis- The issue is simply involved with inflammation in the pancreas. It can cause pain, fever, discomfort, problems in excreting urea, etc. The treatment involves surgery to get rid of inflammation.

3- Liver cancer- Development of cancer in the liver.

4- Pancreas Cancer- Development of cancer in the pancreas.

5- Gall stones- These are small stone like elements that are made in the gallbladder. They could cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, etc. A surgeon sometimes needs to perform a surgery to remove them.

6- Gallbladder Polyps- The condition is when small growths are formed in the inner lining of the gallbladder. Most of the time it is benign but, the chances of it becoming cancerous are not any less.

How to Maintain Good Biliary Health?

The key role here is eating healthy food, having a healthy lifestyle and making a balance between oily-fatty food and healthy- nutritional food.

Also, if you sense that your biliary health does not feel okay, then rather than taking a risk, we suggest you visit a Hepatobiliary specialist and get diagnosed to check your liver health and have a consulting section on how to improve your biliary health.

What We Learned?

We at the beginning understand that, what is and how important is the biliary system for our body and health. We then understood what actually is Hepatobiliary surgeon and Hepatobiliary surgery. Later, we briefly tried to grab the information about the diseases and surgeries that revolve around the biliary system.

So over and all, if we don’t take care of our biliary system….it could lead to some serious even if not diagnosed early, some fatal conditions.

Also, how much of a role is there of a Hepatobiliary Surgeon to help a person in the treatment of liver diseases and in the consultation of how he could manage his liver health.

We advise that if you can’t find a genuine Hepatobiliary Surgeon around you, then you should first consult a general surgeon brisbane for guidance.
